FURLOUGH
Established in January 1973, the Ventura County
Work Furlough Program was originally overseen by the Ventura County
Sheriff's Department at their branch jail in Oxnard. In 1975, the program's
operation was moved to its current location at the Camarillo Airport.
In 1976, administration of the Work Furlough Program was transferred
to the Ventura County Probation Agency by ordinance of the Board of
Supervisors. Following extensive renovations over the past 15 years,
this minimum security jail currently has a capacity for 235 adult inmates.
The inmates serve court-ordered confinement while maintaining their
employment or school attendance in the community. Inmates are released
to their jobs or schools daily, and may also be required to participate
in substance abuse, anger management or other programs as a condition
of their stay. A residential drug treatment program, STAGES, is operated
at the facility by Miracle Recovery Centers, Inc. under contract with
the Probation Agency. Those individuals who require intensive substance
abuse treatment must participate in the STAGES program prior to release
to community activities.
WORK RELEASE
This program provides
an alternative to Court-ordered jail time of up to 30 days for adult offenders.
Participants, considered "low risk" by the Court, may be ordered
to perform rigorous manual labor on a day-per-day basis in lieu of jail
time. Participants receive custody credits for each day of completed work.
DIRECT WORK
This program is for adults who are ordered by the Court to perform
hours of labor. Participants, who pay an administrative program fee, may
perform rigorous manual labor on work crews or work at community-based
organizations. Participants receive hourly credit toward their Direct
Work order for each hour of labor performed.
